Linking Open Spaces
Hobsonville Point has 26ha of parks and reserves, the largest of which is Bomb Point (Onekiritea). The former bombing range, which is dotted with craters and munitions stores, juts out into the harbour and has views across the water to the city skyline. The land was earmarked for high value housing but it was decided that it provided greater long term value, economically and socially, as the anchor point to the Hobsonville Point green network.
The 11ha Te Onekiritea Point (Bomb Point) is the jewel in Hobsonville Point's crown, with rolling land and 270 degree water views.
The other key feature of the open space network is Te Ara Manawa, the Coastal Walkway. This off-road track encircles the neighbourhoods, linking back across the peninsula to form a 4km loop. Neighbourhood streets all terminate at or near the Coastal Walkway. The Coastal Walkway offers residents an alternative to the roads when moving around the township and recreational opportunities to exercise, play or picnic.
Te Arawa Manawa Coastal Walkway links areas of open space and is easily accessed from all neighbourhoods.
Linking these open spaces is the township’s streets, which are viewed as open spaces themselves and planted with street trees to slow traffic and reduce the visual impact of parking.
Hobsonville Point's streets are viewed as open spaces themselves and designed to prioritise pedestrian traffic.
The Open Space Network includes:
- Bomb Point, Onekiritea, a waterfront wilderness park
- The Coastal Walkway, Te Ara Manawa, a 4km looping circuit
- Hobsonville Point Park and playground
- The Landing, a waterfront precinct with shops and a promenade
- Marlborough Oval, a heritage parade ground
- Neighbourhood pocket parks
- Coastal reserves following the natural line of gullies and inlets
- School playing fields
Existing mature trees have been kept.
